Salam...I always confuse in determining the term of probiotic and prebiotic, and what is it for?
ReplyDeleteSalam...as a pharmacist what do you think of the future of drugs oriented medications which always caused side effects, compare to the natural remedies, as more and more research has been conducted.
ReplyDeleteThe term “ probiotics” have been heavily discussed by scholars, but I find the
ReplyDeleteWorld Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, definition as simple and easily understood. It stated that probiotics are "live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host." Microorganisms are tiny living organisms—such as bacteria, viruses, and yeasts—that can be seen only under a microscope. We are definitely familiar with the terms “ friendly bacteria”.Most probiotics are bacteria similar to those naturally found in people's guts and come from two groups, Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium. Within each group, there are different species (for example, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidus), and within each species, different strains (or varieties).
Probiotics usage have been very well documented for various health reasons, mainly for rotavirus-induced or antibiotic-associated diarrhea ; symptoms associated to lactose intolerance; gastrointestinal tract complains; for easing bowel movements ; to counter allergy and atopic dermatitis; and as a safe alternative to antibiotics when you are having cold, flu, cough, sore throats or urinary tract infections.
On the other hand, Prebiotics are nondigestible food ingredients; dietary fibers that stimulate the growth and/or activity of probiotics in our colon (large intestine). By acting as a food source, prebiotics give the probiotic bacteria a chance to exert their influence. When you do come across about prebiotics on products, do observe the types of prebiotics, such as bifidogenic, non-digestible oligosaccharides , mainly inulin ( a type of FOS), fructooligosaccharides (FOS ); galactooligosaccharides (GOS). and (trans) galactooligosaccharides; trans (GOS). . Prebiotics are sometimes known as fermentable fiber.
Another term that you may want to know is synbiotic, which refers to the synergistic combinations of pro- and prebiotics .
